Sports Management Degrees Offered at Western Michigan University

Western Michigan University offers a Bachelor of Science in Recreation with concentration in Sport Management, Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science, Master of Arts in Coaching Sport Performance, Master of Science in Exercise Physiology, and Master of Arts in Sport Management.

The Bachelor of Science in Recreation with a concentration in Sport Management provides students with a variety of opportunities to work with sports organizations in the region. A total of 122 credit hours are needed to complete the degree. The sport management courses include Introduction to Recreation/Sport Management, Administration of Recreational Sports, Sport Media, Legal Issues in Sport, Management of Recreational/Sport, and Research and Writing in Recreation/Sport. Students must also complete a 600-hour internship and a supervised practicum of 225 hours.

The Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science provides students with a solid foundation in physical fitness and health. The program requires a total of 126 credit hours. The required courses include Foundations of Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Exercise and Sports Nutrition, Exercise Testing and Prescription, and Exercise Management of Chronic Diseases and Disorders. Students must also complete a 450-hour internship.

The Master of Arts in Coaching Sport Performance prepares students for coaching careers at all sports levels, including youth, interscholastic, intercollegiate, professional, and Olympic. A total of 36 credit hours are required for the program. The courses include Principles and Practice of Effective Coaching, Governance and Administration of Sport, Research Procedures in Human Performance and Health Education, Sociology of Sport and Physical Activity, Theories of Strength and Conditioning, and Principles of Sport Nutrition and Energy Systems. Students must also complete seminar and field experience components.

The Master of Science in Exercise and Sports Medicine provides students with advanced knowledge of the physiological and functional adaptations to movement. A total of 36 credit hours are needed for completion of the program. The required courses include Exercise Physiology I, Exercise Physiology II, Biomechanics, Laboratory Techniques in Exercise Science, Clinical Exercise Physiology, and Exercise Science Seminar.

The Master of Arts in Sport Management prepares students to combine general management abilities with the specific demands of organizing sports teams and organizations. Students must complete 36 credit hours. Students gain a strong foundation in management, marketing, ethics, financial management, communication, and promotion and legal aspects of sport. The required courses include Governance and Administration of Sport, Legal Issues in Sport, Ethics in Sport and Marketing and Sales in Sport.

Western Michigan University is a public research institution residing in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was established in 1903 as Western State Normal School. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in 1920 and master’s degrees in 1953. It started granting doctoral degrees in 1968. Federal Work Study

The Federal Work-Study, FWS, is a federally funded program that is available to students who demonstrate financial need. The program enables these students to work on a part-time basis to earn money to help pay for college costs. Students make at least the current federal minimum wage and are paid on a biweekly basis. The actual pay differs by each unique circumstance.
