Huntingdon College has a tiny campus of only three acres in a pleasant neighborhood of Montgomery, Alabama. The campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Around 1,100 students attend the traditional day and adult evening degree completion programs. Students from almost every county in the state attend Huntingdon College. They are consistently listed among the top best colleges in the region. They are a member of the Tree Campus USA program. The student to faculty ratio is 14 to one and the average class size is just 17. All academic programs have a basic liberal arts curriculum that branch off into a wide range of academic majors, certification programs and pre-professional programs. Huntingdon College’s placement rates for graduate and professional schools are higher than the national averages.

Student can participate in over 50 clubs and organizations. This includes Greek life, academic honor, student government, spiritual life and performing arts programs. The city of Montgomery has a vibrant music scene, so students may participate in concert choir, music ensembles, marching bands, jazz ensembles and even barbershop groups. Athletic students can participate in the NCAA-Division III intercollegiate teams. This includes lacrosse, soccer, tennis, football, baseball and basketball. Huntingdon College is a proud member of the USA South Athletic Conference. All students are given a laptop computer to use during school. After graduation, it is theirs to keep. The Huntingdon Plan provides students with travel opportunities during the last two years of college for modest fees. Students may elect to participate in exchange programs with foreign universities.

Huntingdon College Application Requirements

Huntingdon College maintains a competitive admission process that requires administrators to individually review and evaluate each application. Admissions decisions are based on overall performance that includes high school GPA, course schedule and ACT/SAT scores. Those who are eligible for regular admission as freshmen must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in high school and an ACT score of 20. Applicants who do not meet these minimum standards will be reviewed for admission on an individual basis. Students who gain admission will enjoy participating in The Huntingdon Plan that includes a free laptop, cheap travel-study, fixed tuition rates and special learning options. These include work-study, internships, preparation programs and student-faculty research opportunities.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The cost of attendance at Huntingdon College is $36,935. Tuition is $25,450, dorms are $9,100, personal expenses are $2,035 and books are $350. The Fixed Tuition program, which is the only plan of its kind in the region, means that students will pay the same costs for tuition all four years of full-time enrollment. The Fixed Books program means that that cost of books is included in the cost of tuition and fees. Over $20 million is annually administered to almost all traditional day students. There are scholarships based on achievement, circumstance and academic merit. Some are awarded on the basis of leadership, service or participation in specific clubs or organizations. There are affiliate programs with high schools, corporate partners and community organizations.

The financial aid staff helps students with planning for college. They inform students about financial aid types, amounts and requirements. There are loans, grants and scholarships available to students who complete the federal government’s financial aid and scholarship application processes. Generally speaking, students may only receive one merit-based grant or scholarship, but these awards are often packaged with federal and state aid. The Prepaid Affordable College Tuition (PACT) is a state program that uses contracts to pre-purchase undergraduate tuition and mandatory fees. These benefits can be used for 135 semester hours of undergraduate tuition. The actual payment amount is based on the average tuition at public four-year institutions. The rate is around $249 per semester hour and $151 for mandatory fees per semester.

The Financial Assistance for Methodist Students program is only for students who are active members of the United Methodist church. For example, the Cross and Flame Grant awards $11,500 to full-time day students who are active church members with recommendations from Methodist clergy. This grant is renewable for up to three years of study. The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation provides a $1,000 matching scholarship to eligible applicants who are sponsored by their church. Huntingdon College is a member of the Tuition Exchange and of the Council of Independent Colleges Tuition Exchange Program (CIC-TEP). This reciprocal scholarship program is designed for children and family members of staff and faculty who work at over 530 higher learning institutions.

Student Experience

The accredited sport management degree program provides exposure to sport facilities, rigorous in-class training and opportunities to gain experience through internships. The curriculum covers a variety of interdisciplinary topics, from business to marketing to management. Students can specialize in media, advertising, communications and administration. Students learn planning, controlling, organizing, directing, budgeting and evaluating skills for proper sports management. Students are exposed are exposed to a variety of organizational settings like college, amateur and professional sports. Internships are available to work in news media, advertising management, sport marketing, corporate planning and community recreation. Sports management majors may take electives in biomechanics, kinesiology, physiology, anatomy, weight control, exercise prescription and basic first aid.

Students learn about exercise science to develop advanced knowledge of exercise training, exercise metabolism, fitness standards, health maintenance, nutrition guidance, risk identification and injury rehabilitation. These classes prepare sports management professionals to successfully understand physical therapy, medicine prescriptions, occupational therapy, exercise physiology and chiropractic benefits. Students gain the skills for becoming personal trainers and conditioning coaches who help clients with cardiac, strength and stamina testing and training. Students are encouraged to gain certification through organizations such as the American College of Sports Medicine, the Aerobic and Fitness Association of America or the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
