Studying Sports Management at The University of Louisville

The University of Louisville offers an undergrad program in sports administration that requires students take general ed requirements and 39 credits from within the program. Those credits include courses as well as an internship. Students can do an internship working for the university or for a sports organization in the city. Louisville is home to a number of sports organizations and agencies that offer opportunities for students like Churchill Downs, which hosts one of the largest and most important horse races in the world. The university itself has a men’s basketball team that routinely ranks as one of the tops in the nation. Louisville Slugger also operates out of the city and has its own museum as well as a factory that offers tours to give guests the chance to see the making of its famous bats. Most MLB teams in the country use Louisville Slugger bats.
Some of the courses in this program include principles of sports administration, issues and ethics in sports, sport marketing, sports administration in nonprofit organizations, and sports communication. Students can also sign up for an independent study course and work with a professor or an adviser to complete a major research paper or project over the course of a semester. UL also offers a B.S. in Health and Human Performance (Exercise Science) that is part of the education recognition program of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). It is also accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

About the University of Louisville
The University of Louisville is one of the largest public university campuses in Kentucky and has one of the largest enrollment rates out of all schools in the state. Founded in 1798, it opened as the Jefferson Seminary and offered both college classes and high school classes. This school later closed because of financial issues but is the direct precursor to the university. It wasn’t until the 1840s that the campus opened up as a public university. The undergrad programs offered by the university now rank among the best in the nation. Also called U of L, the university appears on lists of the best American colleges put out by Forbes, Washington Monthly and U.S. News & World Report.
U of L has a main campus in the Old Louisville area of the city, which is home to the city’s largest concentration of historic buildings. Though the university renovated some of those buildings to meet the needs of its students, it also brought in some more modern buildings and constructed buildings designed for students who want to live on the campus as well as those used for sports and classes. It also operates a Health Sciences campus for students majoring in medicine, nursing, and similar subjects. U of L has a total enrollment of more than 22,000 students. More than 76% of those students come from Louisville, Jefferson County or another part of Kentucky.
University of Louisville Accreditation Details
U of L has regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and its Commission on Colleges. While you may not think this is important for you, it is if you want to transfer credits later or if you want to bring in any college credits with you. Regional accreditation is also a requirement for those who want to get federal or state financial aid. The other types of accreditation that the university has comes from organizations that accredit programs relating to a specific field of study like business. University of Louisville Application Requirements
All incoming U of L students must follow a college prep curriculum in high school. Students must take four years of English classes, three years of math, science and social studies classes and two years of foreign language. They’ll also need to take a full year of physical education and health. The university asks for an official high school transcript that shows the student took and passed all those classes. This transcript should also show that the student took at least seven electives that can include art and other types of classes. It must also show the classes taken and grades received over the course of at least six semesters.
As the University of Louisville is a selective school and only accepts around 50% of the applications that it receives, it’s important that students fulfill all application requirements to have a chance at one of those spots. There is an online application that allows students to create a personal account, which lets them complete that application over time instead of in one sitting. The university offers separate applications for incoming freshmen, transfer students and adult students who are over the age of 22. Once a student submits the application and pays the $50 application fee, he or she will need to submit an official test score from the ACT or SAT and a transcript. U of L will also accept a counselor form from a high school guidance counselor for those enrolling in select programs.
The University of Louisville Tuition and Financial Aid
The cost of attending the University of Louisville starts at $462 per credit hour for college students from Kentucky. Nonresidents pay a higher rate of $1,088 per credit hour. Any student taking online undergrad classes will pay $497 per credit hour. The university estimates that students living on its campus will pay around $20.700 a year, which includes all fees as well as a dorm room and a meal plan. This amount rises to more than $35,000 a year for nonresidents. The University of Louisville also offers southern Indiana residents the right to take classes and pay the same amount as Kentucky residents do. This is because of the close proximity of the campus to the state border.
Students who need help paying for college should fill out the FAFSA. Not only is this form available online, but it now lets students submit their information nearly a year before they want to take classes. It goes live in October each year. U of L will use the information submitted by each student to create a financial aid package for each student. The package may include loans, grants, admission to the work-study program and even scholarships.
