About Texas A&M Corpus Christi

Texas A&M Corpus Christi opened its doors in 1947 on Ward Island as a private institution affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Known as the University of Corpus Christi, the school struggled financially from the beginning and, when the campus was almost destroyed by Hurricane Celia in 1970, they requested assistance from the Texas Legislature. The Baptist General Convention sold the land to the state, retaining ten acres to use for a student religious center.

Originally, the school was named Texas A&I University at Corpus Christi but eventually became the Corpus Christ State University as it was not officially affiliated with the Texas A&M system. When it did officially join, it was renamed Texas A&M University Corpus Christi in 1993.
