Texas A&M University boasts one of the oldest and most notable sports management programs in the country. Its Division of Sports Management celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2013 and has 13 faculty members who remain dedicated and devoted to the education of students. Students can earn a general degree with a concentration in sports leadership, declare a sports management minor or earn an undergraduate degree in sports management. Those who already have an undergraduate degree can complete a Master of Science in Sports Management online or on campus. There is also a PhD program with an emphasis in kinesiology available through the university.
Training professional managers is the primary goal of the program. The undergraduate program strives to help students better understand the role they have in the world and how they can help athletes at all levels. Some of the program’s graduates now work for professional sports organizations around the world, in colleges across the country and even in sports complexes and facilities. Students earning a bachelor’s degree can also take an internship that counts towards the credits needed for graduation. Texas A&M University encourages sports management students to do an internship to gain hands on experience but also allows students to take extra classes in lieu of an internship.
About Texas A&M
In the 1800s, the United States government established an act that allowed interested parties to buy plots of land that they would use to build new schools. Texas saw the foundation of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas in 1871 after a local man donated land to the state for the purpose of a new school. Though only six students initially enrolled, enrollment increased at the start of each new semester. That increased enrollment eventually led to the school changing its name to Texas A&M University. The school officially began admitting female students during the early 1910s, and the university now has nearly as many female students as it does males.
When Washington Monthly issued its list of top American colleges, it placed Texas A&M University at number three, but ARWU, Forbes and U.S. News and World Report ranked the school lower on their own lists. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, which ranks schools according to tuition costs and fees, determined that Texas A&M was the 23rd most affordable school in the country. Some of the rankings the university received happened because of individual programs that the school offers. The Wall Street Journal gave high marks to the university’s business programs and ranked it at number two on a list of the best schools that help students find and obtain jobs after graduating.
