About Indiana State University

Indiana State University is a large public university in Indiana with an enrollment of more than 12,000 students. Located in Terre Haute, the history of the university dates back to the 1860s. When first established, it went by the name of the Indiana State Normal School because it offered only education programs. It started as a way to educate and train the new teachers needed across the state. As the school expanded its offerings and began adding some new programs, it became the Indiana State Teachers College. Shifting its focus to other areas of study helped it become Indiana State College and then Indiana State University.

Also called ISU, it ranks on several lists put out by major organizations and publications. Princeton Review listed it as one of the top colleges in the Midwest for 13 years in a row, and Washington Monthly placed ISU at number 71 on its list of the top colleges in the nation. The Scott College of Business, which is its business school that offers both undergrad and graduate programs, ranks as one of the best in the country, too. ISU offers laptop scholarships to incoming students with a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Those students receive a free laptop or tablet when they enroll.

Indiana State University Accreditation Details

Though neither of the sport management programs that ISU offers has specialty accreditation, the university itself has accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS). As this is a type of regional accreditation, it allows students to seek financial aid from the government and to use that aid to cover their costs and expenses. Some of the other organizations that granted the university accreditation relate to some of the classes that these students take. Students will usually take some courses on dietetics that have accreditation from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Other courses have accreditation from the American Psychological Association, American Occupational Therapy Association and American Physical Therapy Association.

Indiana State University Application Requirements

ISU accepts 86% of the undergrad applications that it receives each year, but the university still has requirements that students must meet before they can enroll. Undergrads have the option of making an appointment with the admissions department to fill out an application or to get some help with the application, but students can also walk in and work on an application. Most students choose to use the online application because it helps them get an answer faster. ISU asks that students pay a $25 application fee when it comes time to submit the application. Undergrads must also submit an official score from the ACT or SAT and an official high school transcript. Those over the age of 25 do not need to submit test scores. Incoming students must also show that they followed a college prep curriculum that meets Indiana state guidelines and that they had a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Graduate students need a college GPA of at least 3.0, but some programs will accept students with a lower GPA when there is more space available. ISU has a graduate application that students can complete online, which asks questions about the student’s background, including where the student studied and any experience he or she has. This application includes a section for students to write a statement of purpose, which is essentially just a short statement that explains why they student picked ISU and what the student wants to do in the future. Graduate students must also submit a score from the GMAT or GRE, a resume and a list of three references.

Tuition and Financial Aid

More than 75% of incoming freshmen receive some financial aid, and around 80% of all new students receive aid too. As a public university, ISU keeps its costs as low as possible to reduce the amount of financial aid that those students need. The cost for undergrads starts at around $8,700 a year for students who are Indiana residents. Nonresidents pay around $19,200 a year. ISU has a reduced rate that applies to students who live in neighboring states, including Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky and Illinois, which is around $11,100 a year. The cost for graduate students starts at $513 per credit hour, which is the rate that residents and students of neighboring states pay. All other students pay $793 per credit hour.

Any student who needs financial aid should file the FAFSA in the late fall through the early spring before enrolling. The amount of aid and the type of aid given depends on the need of each individual student. ISU has scholarship programs for undergrads, and those students can also get grants and loans to cover their expenses. Graduate students may qualify for some grants, but most of these students use loans to pay for their costs.
