Sports Management Degree Programs in New Mexico

Sports not only provides entertainment for millions throughout the world, it has become an industry that generates a significant amount of revenue, which is why sports management degrees in New Mexico and in other states are becoming increasingly popular. In some areas, sports are a significant part of the economy and there is a need for individuals with an understanding of sports management in those areas.

Nationwide, more than 12,000 people were employed as agents for performing artist and athletes, earning approximately $97,220 per year in 2014. There were also almost 244,000 people employed as coaches and scouts throughout the country. Coaching and scouting positions were expected to grow by 15 percent over the next decade. The growth is thought to be in high school and college sports departments as more schools add athletics to their curriculum.

Eastern New Mexico University

College of Education and Technology

The College of Education and Technology at Eastern New Mexico University offer students the skills and knowledge they need to become teachers, agribusiness owners, childcare professionals or to further their education at the graduate level. Students are provided an education that empowers them and helps them become leaders in their chosen field. The college offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a wide variety of subjects from education to sports management.

Physical Education

The College of Education and Technology at Eastern New Mexico University offers an undergraduate degree in Physical Education with a Sport and Recreation Management concentration. The program prepares students for careers as professionals in health and physical education. Graduates have found employment in school districts, as entry-level personnel in sports organizations, recreation and fitness professionals and coaches. It is recommended that students who enroll in the program also enroll in the Physical Education endorsement program should they plan to seek licensure. Students are provided intensive field experiences that prepare them for sports management careers. Courses required to complete the program include:

University of New Mexico

College of Education

The College of Education at the University of New Mexico offers diverse programs that provide students with the tools and knowledge that will extend far past the classroom, helping them to become leaders in their field. The college offers undergraduate and graduate degrees with rigorous curriculum taught by a highly-qualified faculty. Students are also able to join many organizations that will help them gain real-world experience as they pursue their education.

M.S. in Physical Education

The College of Education at the University of New Mexico offers a Master of Science in Physical Education with a concentration in Sports Administration. In order to enter the program, students must have a bachelor’s degree or higher and must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in undergraduate work. The program is available in a thesis and non-thesis option. Courses required for the thesis option include:

        • Legal Aspects of Sport
        • Research Design
        • Risk Management in Sport

        • Sport Marketing and Promotion

Students are required to complete and defend a thesis in order to obtain their degree.

Although a thesis is not required as part of this degree plan, students must complete an internship in the sports management field.

Doctoral Program, Ph.D. in HPER

The College of Education at the University of New Mexico offers a doctorate in Health, Physical Education and Recreation that prepares students for leadership positions in a wide range of sports-related industries. Students may concentrate their studies in:

        • Sports Marketing
        • Sport Leadership
        • Sport Communication
        • Risk Management in Sport

Students must have a master’s degree to enter the program and a GPA in their most recent degree of 3.0 or better. The program is 72 credit hours plus 18 dissertation hours. In order to graduate, students must successfully complete an oral and written examination. Courses for the program include:

        • Legal Aspects of Sport
        • Organizational Theory in Sport

In addition, at least 18 credits must be earned in courses related to the student’s dissertation. These courses include statistics, research and modeling courses.

University of the Southwest – New Mexico

School of Business and Professional Studies

The School of Business and Professional Studies at the University of the Southwest New Mexico prepares students for a wide variety of careers in business. Students are able to supplement studies in many specialty areas and customize their degree to meet their own career goals. The school offers nine undergraduate and two graduate degrees.

Sport Management

The School of Business and Professional Studies at the University of the Southwest New Mexico offers a Bachelor of Business Administration with a specialty in Sport Management. The program prepares students for a variety of positions in the domestic and international sports industry. Graduates have found positions as general managers of professional sports teams, radio announcers, corporate sports departments, recreational directors and sports agents. Students gain an understanding of economics, management, sociology and project planning through hands-on applications. Upon completion of the program, students may apply for certification with the National American Society of Sport Management as well as the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.
