Studying Sports Management at Lasell University

Lasell University appears in our ranking of the 50 Best Bachelor’s in Sports Science Degree Programs (Campus).

Housed in the School of Business, Lasell’s Sport Management undergraduate major introduces students to the sports industry through classes specifically tailored to their major. Undergraduate students not only complete coursework accredited by the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation, but also participate in hands-on experiences that allow them to make industry connections and develop their resumes. Lasell University also offers undergraduates the option to extend their studies for a fifth year to earn their Master of Science in Sports Management.

The Master of Science in Sports Management program that Lasell University offers is an online program that allows students to take all required classes and complete their degrees without taking classes on this Massachusetts college campus. It accepts just 23 new students each year, which helps keep class sizes down and keeps tuition costs lower. Full-time students can complete the program in one year, but part-time students can take up to two years to finish the program.

This program has four concentrations that students can pick from based on their education or career goals: athletic administration, sport leadership, sport tourism and hospitality management, and parks and recreation. Each concentration requires that students take at least nine credits of classes from within that field. Students must also take 24 credits of core sport management classes and take a capstone class that is worth another three credits. The athletic administration program focuses closely on the skills that managers and administrators need when working in sports complexes, but the sports leadership program helps students develop better leadership skills. Those who select the parks and recreation route learn the skills needed to work in government organizations and agencies. Its sports tourism and hospitality management program is best for those who want to work in or own their own travel companies.

Students enrolling in one of these programs can begin checking out the online version of Lasell classes right away. The college has its own unique system that lets students log in with their own accounts, view the work they need to do in their classes and even participate in discussions and view lectures online. All classes last for just eight weeks and provide students will ample time to complete their assignments. The sports management core of courses includes classes on current issues in the sports industry, introduction to sports hospitality, managing diversity in a sports organization and sports leadership. Lasell University awards students with three credits for any internships they do too.

Lasell also offers degrees in athletic training and exercise science.

About Lasell University

Lasell University is a small and private college in Massachusetts that is coeducational today but originally opened as a school for women. Established in 1851 as a seminary for women, it uses the name of Edward Lasell to pay homage to its founder. Lasell spent some time working with young women and decided that they needed a school of their own in this part of the state. The school operated under the names of the Lasell Female Seminary and the Lasell Seminary for Young Women during its early years. As a finishing school, it offered basic classes designed to help women function as wives and mothers. That all changed in later years after the school added education programs to its curriculum, which turned it into a junior college.

As a junior college, Lasell offered a number of associate’s degree programs, but in the 1980s, the college applied for a charter to offer bachelor’s programs. That led to the campus becoming Lasell University and the school dropping associate’s programs from its curriculum. Lasell offered its first master’s program in 2002, which was so popular that the college added other programs for students with a bachelor’s degree. The college’s enrollment now tops 1,600, but nearly 80% of its students choose to live on its campus with the rest commuting from home.

Lasell University Accreditation Details

The New England Association of Schools and Colleges is the organization responsible for granting Lasell University regional accreditation. Regional accreditation is so important because it guarantees that a university offers quality programs and that it provides its students with more opportunities when it comes to finding jobs and transferring credits to another campus. Though the college is quite small, it has specialty accreditation too for its program in exercise science. This accreditation comes from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

Lasell University Application Requirements

Lasell University offers one of the shortest and easiest to fill out applications of all colleges that offer graduate programs in the country. Instead of asking students to create accounts and use those accounts to stay in touch with admissions officers, Lasell has a simple online application that is just one page in length. It includes sections on the student’s name, current address, permanent home address if different, contact information and program the student wants to study or degree that student hopes to earn. Students will also need to list information about the schools they attended as well as their professional histories.

After clicking submit on this application, students will need to submit official transcripts from the colleges they attended. Lasell asks for an official transcript from any school in which the student earned credits for a bachelor’s degree. This transcript must show that the student maintained a grade point average of at least 3.0 too. Students must also write a personal statement that explains their overall strengths and what will help them succeed in graduate school as well as their goals once they enter a program. Other graduate admissions requirements include two letters of recommendation from either employers or professors and a resume.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Lasell University charges a tuition rate of $600 per credit hour taken. Students taking a full course load of nine classes will pay $5,400 a semester in tuition alone. There is a comprehensive fee of $40 charged each semester too. Those who do not pay their balances in full are subject to a late fee that is equal to 1.5% of the balance left on the account at the beginning of the next month. Students will also need to pay their own living expenses as well as cover the cost of textbooks and any other supplies they might need in their classes. Lasell gives students the option of paying online, using a wire transfer or paying in person. The college also offers payment plans for those who cannot pay all their costs in full.

Those who need financial aid can apply for assistance via the FAFSA. Graduate students may need their own tax returns or those of their parents/guardians to fill out this form. The federal government offers unsubsidized student loans for grad students and allows students to borrow just over $20,000 a year after finishing at least one year of college. Lasell will also accept alternative and private student loans.
