At Warf-Pickel Hall, the Claudius G. Clemmer College of Education provides a 120-credit B.S. in Sport Management headed by Dr. Amy Greene for East Tennessee State University Bucs to take business-related courses like Organizational Behavior, gain NCAA Division I experience, and secure 130-hour internships. Chaired by Dr. Jason Davis, the B.S. in Park & Recreation Management builds a 120-credit, four-year curriculum where undergrads could enter the Basler Team Challenge, take Outdoor Adventure trips, join Weightlifting Club, and intern with Renaissance Camp. The B.S. in Exercise Science follows a 120-credit, NASPE-approved path outlined by Dr. Brandi Eveland-Sayers for future Certified Exercise Physiologists to train in J. Madison Brooks Gymnasium, conduct EXSS Lab research, add the Active Lifestyles & Wellness Certificate, and study abroad from Australia to Ireland.
Online on Blackboard Connect since Spring 2016, the Ed.D. in Global Sport Leadership has developed a 60-credit, multi-faceted plan advised by Dr. Michael Sagas with executive 6000-level courses like Sport Branding, one two-week field trip abroad, and a capstone research project. Directed by Dr. Natalie Smith, the M.S. in Sport Management requires 33-36 online credits from Facility Planning to Media Relations with 400-hour internship placements, such as the Tennessee Titans, Chattanooga Red Wolves, or Johnson City Cardinals. The M.S. in Sport Science & Coach Education offers a 36-credit, non-thesis sequence coordinated by Dr. Mike Ramsey with two concentrations for Strength and Conditioning or Applied Sport Science plus Olympic Training Site practice. There’s also a 72-credit Ph.D. in Sport Physiology & Performance for Johnson City cohorts to complete a full dissertation.
About East Tennessee State University
East Tennessee State University originated in 1911 when President Sidney G. Gilbreath welcomed an inaugural coed class of 29 to the East Tennessee State Normal School. In 1912, the K-12 training school added Latin and domestic science courses. In 1920, Coach W.R. Windes started the first football team for a 3-3 season. In 1925, it became the East Tennessee State Teachers College. Accredited in 1927, it won a Smoky Mountain Conference championship in 1938. In 1959, East Tennessee received the NCAA George Mikan Award. In 1963, the East Tennessee State University name was adopted. By 2013, ETSU won its first Atlantic Sun Tournament game for baseball. East Tennessee State University Accreditation Details
On December 3, 2017, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Board of Trustees voted to approve East Tennessee State University’s Substantive Change Request to keep Level VI accreditation current through 2023 under President Brian Noland, Ph.D., who accepted a CASE Educational Fundraising Award. Located 251 miles south via Route 23 in Decatur, this acclaimed 11-state Appalachia Region accreditor is authorized by the U.S. Education Department to review ETSU’s 140+ degrees. Further, the Claudius G. Clemmer College of Education is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and National Association of Sport Physical Education (NASPE).
East Tennessee State University Application Requirements
Enrollment at East Tennessee State University is classified as “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s because 6,978 of the 8,009 Fall 2018 applicants were selected for 87 percent acceptance. First-year Buccaneers seeking the B.S. in Sport Management must be finishing a high school curriculum with four English and four math units. Applicants age 18+ can apply with the GED equivalent if graded above 450. Freshmen need a minimum secondary GPA of 2.3. Scoring at least 19 on the ACT or 980 on the SAT is mandated. The Class of 2022 presented an average 3.4 GPA, 1060 SAT, and 23 ACT mark. Clemmer College of Education transfers with 12-60 previous credits must have overall GPAs of 1.4 or higher. International students show English proficiency with 79 TOEFL iBT, 6.5 IELTS, 53 PTE, and similar scores. The Graduate School prefers accredited four-year bachelor’s completion with GPAs above 2.7. The Ed.D. in Global Sport Leadership requires a master’s degree, 3.0 GPAs, and three years of experience. Satisfactory GRE scores are at least 146 verbal, 146 quantitative, and 292 total.
East Tennessee State University conveniently has rolling undergrad admission. Midway Scholars are only considered until March 1st though. Both M.S. programs have May 15th, August 10th, and December 5th deadlines. It’s recommended international post-grads apply by May 1st or October 1st. Online Ed.D. in Global Sport Leadership must file before June 15th. The Ph.D. in Sport Physiology & Performance closes on February 15th. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2019-20, East Tennessee State University is charging in-state B.S. in Sport Management majors $4,745 per term. Non-resident bachelor’s tuition is $14,336 per semester full-time. These figures include the $959 student service fee. Living at the Johnson City campus’ dorms like Powell Hall adds $8,228 for yearly room and board. ETSU budgets $1,276 for books and $5,385 for miscellaneous. Annual undergrad attendance equals about $24,068 in-state or $42,332 out-of-state. Baccalaureate eCampus courses are $523 per credit. The Graduate School bills Tennesseans $5,279 and non-residents $13,415 per semester full-time. Online programs like the M.S. in Sport Management cost $801 per credit. The Ed.D. in Global Sport Leadership is discounted to $670 per credit.
According to the NCES College Navigator, the Office of Financial Aid in Burgin Dossett Hall Room 105 links 97 percent of new full-time ETSU Buccaneers to tuition assistance averaging $10,213 each for $19.27 million combined. Clemmer College of Education funds include the Harley-McClaskey Scholarship, Sara Goodin Memorial Scholarship, Lauren Cole Memorial Scholarship, Nellie Jessee Scholarship, Robert & Anna Lacey Scholarship, Susan Roark Ramsey Memorial Scholarship, Hattie Elizabeth Vanover Reed Memorial Scholarship, Isabel Hayes Williams Scholarship, and Lloyd & Winifred Roberts Memorial Scholarship. The Presidential Scholarship gifts $5,000 annually to Tennessee freshmen meeting the 30 ACT score and 75 service hour minimum. The Midway Honors Scholars Program covers full tuition and fees for community college transfers with 60+ credits and cumulative GPAs over 3.5. Federal resources, such as the Pell Grant or Work-Study Program, require FAFSA applications coded 003487. Tennesseans could also claim the General Assembly Merit Scholarship, Hope Access Grant, Foster Child Grant, Horatio Alger Scholarship, Aspire Award, Scarlett Family Foundation Scholarship, and more.
