Bordered by both Virginia and North Carolina, this mountain institution is the fourth largest university in the state and provides students with both a big academic experience and charming small town feel.

East Tennessee State University was first founded in 1911 and was known as the East Tennessee State Normal School. Back then, the school had only 29 students enrolled and featured two courses of study. Today, East Tennessee State University draws more than 14,000 undergraduate and graduate students each year to study at more than 11 professional schools with over 140 intellectually stimulating and academically challenging programs. Year after year, many of these programs rank top in the nation.

East Tennessee State University Accreditation Details

East Tennessee State University maintains accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. It is also a Tennessee Board of Regents Institution.

Several of the University’s programs are separately accredited. The Bachelor of Science in Sport and Leisure Management is offered under the College of Education. The College of Education holds programs that are accredited through a number of different agencies, including: the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation, the Tennessee Department of Education, the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Ed. Programs and the National Association of Sport Physical Education.

East Tennessee State University Application Requirements

In order to apply to East Tennessee State University, all students applying for undergraduate admission must:

• Submit a completed online application with a non-refundable $25 application fee
• Submit copies of official high school or college transcripts
• Submit SAT or ACT scores

While the basic admission requirements are the same, there may be a few differences between incoming freshmen, transfer students and international students. In order to be considered, incoming freshman students must maintain a minimum of a 2.3 grade point average on a 4.0 scale or hold a minimum ACT composite score of a 19. Those who do not meet the minimum requirements may be eligible for alternative admission.

The deadline for undergraduate admissions is August 15th for the fall semester and December 15th for the spring semester. Student orientation dates are held intermittently. Students must be registered to attend.

Those who are applying for graduate admissions must submit:

• A completed online application with $35 non-refundable application fee
• Official transcripts from all high schools and universities attended
• A residency inquiry form (if claiming Tennessee residency)
• A type-written essay of 150-300 words citing why you are interested in a particular program and what strengths you would bring to the table

Additional requirements may apply based on the specific college and program. Students are encouraged to double-check the admission requirements for their specific program of interest.

The preferred deadline for graduate admissions for the spring semester is April 30th for international students and June 1st for domestic students. Those applying to the fall semester must submit their completed applications by October 1st for all international students and October 30th for all domestic students. Applications for summer classes are due January 29th for international students and March 14th for domestic students.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The tuition rate for undergraduate students who are residents of Tennessee is $374.00 per credit hour. This includes the in-state maintenance fee and program service fee. For all out-of-state students, the cost of admission is $1,075.00 per credit.
For graduate students, the tuition is $519 per credit hour, including all associated fees. For out-of-state graduate students, the cost of tuition is $1,292.00 per credit hour.

East Tennessee State University offers a number of financial aid opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students to help fund their education. Such opportunities include scholarships, grants, loans, student work programs and various fee discount programs.

Student Experience

Students who attend East Tennessee State University can expect a very rewarding personal, professional and academic experience that is truly unlike any other.

Students who embark on an academic journey with the Sports Management program at East Tennessee State University are able to prepare themselves for a robust and stimulating career in the sports management industry. The Bachelor of Science Degree in Sport and Leisure Management gives students the tools they need to succeed in the field. With a very challenging academic curriculum and abundant field work opportunities, students are encouraged to learn, grow and become prominent sports management professionals.

Students are expected to complete 120 credit hours to graduate this program. Each of those 120 hours is divided up into three sections to cover all there is to know about the industry specifics. Students are required to complete an internship prior to graduation where they gain valuable experience working directly in the sports management industry. Students who participate in this program, specifically, are given ample opportunity to volunteer their time in the community as well as participate in the ETSU Sports Management Club. The ETSU Sports Management Club provides students with an interactive platform to network with other like-minded individuals and helps prepare them for a successful career in the field.
