York College of Pennsylvania

Not only does the York College of Pennsylvania offer one of the best sport management programs in the state, but it offers some great opportunities for those majors, too. The Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center is one of the top athletic complexes among local colleges. Not only can students workout and train in the center, but they can take classes there, too. The college hosts an annual Sport Management Professional Day that brings in people working in this field to talk to students. Students can also attend other special events during the school year.

This program includes many different types of practical work. Students will complete four practicums and complete one each semester during their first few years in the program. They will then do a summer internship and a professional work experience. The college encourages students to use those programs to learn more about the best fields and to expand their own professional networks. Students can work for professional tour organizations such as the PGA and work in summer camps or for professional sports teams.

Students in the Bachelor of Science program must maintain a 2.0-grade point average in all their classes. They will take required courses and at least 12 credits of electives. Though they earn credits for their internships and practicums, most of the credits they earn will come from required sport management classes. Those classes include Sport in Society, Introduction to Sport Management, Facility and Event Management, Legal Aspects of Sport, and Ethics and Current Issues in Sport.

About York College of Pennsylvania

The York College of Pennsylvania is a full college named for both the city and the state where it was founded. The college considers its date of establishment as 1787, which was when the York County Academy opened. This school worked with the St. John’s Episcopal Church for a number of years. A second school, which was a small college, also opened around this time in the same area. The two schools worked together to offer classes and later merged in the 1960s to become York Junior College. Near the end of the decade, the school became York College of Pennsylvania and switched from junior and two-year programs to four-year bachelor’s degree programs.

Also called York College, it took over the operations of a former day school and now allows education majors to work with students in that school. Undergrads can major in more than 50 subjects, but the college also offers one doctoral program and a few graduate programs. Both The Princeton Review and U.S. News and World Report rank York College as one of the best colleges in the north and the northeast.

Sport management majors and other students who like playing sports can join teams operated by the Athletics and Recreation Department. Those teams use the Spartans name and compete at the NCAA level. The college has both 11 teams for men and another 11 teams for women.

York College of Pennsylvania Accreditation Details

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) granted regional accreditation to York College. This organization once put the college on probation during a renewal process but then worked with the school to make sure that it met the requirements for full accreditation. With regional accreditation, students shouldn’t have any problems getting financial aid to attend the college or transferring credits to and from the college. The college’s sport management program has accreditation from the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA). York College has accreditation for its nursing, business and a few of its other degree programs also.

York College of Pennsylvania Application Requirements

Some of the programs that York College offers will only accept students with a specific test score and a grade point average, but its sport management program is less selective. Prospective freshmen must meet the admissions requirements of the college itself though. The college has an early decision deadline of November 1, which lets students apply and find out quickly whether they can start in the fall. York College typically sends out its acceptance letters within a month of the early decision deadline. The college recommends that students apply early if they also need financial aid.

Incoming freshmen will use the application designed for them. Not only does this application allow students to easily apply online, but it lets them save their progress and spend as much time on it as they would like. They will submit their official high school transcripts and official test scores. York College will accept both the ACT and the SAT. Once they receive their acceptance letters, students can visit the college’s website and put down their deposits.

York College of Pennsylvania Tuition and Financial Aid

Though York College is a private school, it offers lower tuition rates than other colleges do while providing students with a range of financial aid packages. With tuition and fees, students pay $10,050 per semester for a total of $20,100 a year. The college gives students the option of living on its York campus or living off-campus on their own or with their families. Those who live on its campus pay at least $11,200 for room and board each year.

Students of all types can apply for institutional aid from the college or for government aid. To apply for government aid, they must use the FAFSA. Students may have the chance to work for the college in some capacity, but most students will also get grants and loans. This type of aid can come from the federal and/or the state government. The college itself offers grants for students who submit FAFSA forms that show they need help paying for school.

There are 12 different scholarships for incoming students, too. York College provides merit scholarships to students who submit transcripts and test scores that are higher than those provided by their peers. Students do not need to do anything extra to apply for those scholarships. The college also offers funds for student musicians and athletes. Scouts will identify the players worthy of scholarships, while the college asks musicians to submit videos of their work and play in front of a panel of professors. The York College of Pennsylvania also offers scholarships for the children of alumni who attended and graduated from the college and those majoring in select degree programs.
