About Georgia Southern University
Georgia Southern University was founded in 1906 as the First District Agricultural & Mechanical School. It was originally a land grant college funded by the government and opened with only four staff members and 15 students. For almost 20 years it taught students techniques for agriculture and homemaking skills. Soon, the state found a need for more teachers than they currently were producing. In 1924 it reopened as Georgia Normal School and became a center for training new teachers, which were in a shortage at the time. Just five years later it was changed to South Georgia Teachers College after the development of a four-year teaching curriculum. Over the next few decades, it changed its name multiple times while expanding the university curriculum and doubling their enrollment to thousands.
In 1990, it settled on its current name of Georgia Southern University after being granted university status and has been expanding and growing ever since. Georgia Southern University is the largest higher education university in the southern half of the state. With over 20,000 students enrolled yearly, its bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral level programs prepare students to live a life of success. The university celebrates diversity with students from all 50 states and 88 other nations worldwide. There are 118 different programs of study to choose from and a 21:1 student to faculty ratio. It is a NCAA Division 1 athletic school with 17 varsity teams.
With over $300 million in renovations since opening, the university sits on over 900 acres and contains over 100 buildings. It is also ranked in the top four of the most affordable colleges to attend in the state. Forbes and U.S. News & World Reports have recognized many programs at Georgia Southern University as being some of the best in the country.

In addition to this online application, the sports management master’s degree program requires a few additional items. The first item is a personal statement from the student. This personal statement includes the student’s career goals within the next five years. This should be written out as a five-year plan after graduation. It should also state why the student is interested in attending the sports management program at Georgia Southern University. Student’s personal achievements and relevant academic achievements need to be stated in the personal statement as well.
Transcripts from the student’s undergraduate degree need to be submitted with the online application. The student must have a bachelor’s degree to apply for this program. If they hold other degrees or certification, transcripts should be submitted from those schools as well.
The student must take a post-studies test before applying. GRE or GMAT scores are preferred and need to be current and taken within the last five years. These test scores must be submitted for the application to be viewed by Georgia Southern University. International students must take the TOEFL exam.
Once these items are submitted, the sports management program also requires a current resume. This graduate program wants to see the professional experience that is in line with the degree program. This experience is most beneficial if it is within the sports field of work but it is not required for admission into the program.
