About Georgia Southern University

Georgia Southern University was founded in 1906 as the First District Agricultural & Mechanical School. It was originally a land grant college funded by the government and opened with only four staff members and 15 students. For almost 20 years it taught students techniques for agriculture and homemaking skills. Soon, the state found a need for more teachers than they currently were producing. In 1924 it reopened as Georgia Normal School and became a center for training new teachers, which were in a shortage at the time. Just five years later it was changed to South Georgia Teachers College after the development of a four-year teaching curriculum. Over the next few decades, it changed its name multiple times while expanding the university curriculum and doubling their enrollment to thousands.

In 1990, it settled on its current name of Georgia Southern University after being granted university status and has been expanding and growing ever since. Georgia Southern University is the largest higher education university in the southern half of the state. With over 20,000 students enrolled yearly, its bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral level programs prepare students to live a life of success. The university celebrates diversity with students from all 50 states and 88 other nations worldwide. There are 118 different programs of study to choose from and a 21:1 student to faculty ratio. It is a NCAA Division 1 athletic school with 17 varsity teams.

With over $300 million in renovations since opening, the university sits on over 900 acres and contains over 100 buildings. It is also ranked in the top four of the most affordable colleges to attend in the state. Forbes and U.S. News & World Reports have recognized many programs at Georgia Southern University as being some of the best in the country.
