Bachelor of Science in Sport Management

The Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management at Albertus Magnus College prepares students to utilize business, management, sport, physical education, and coaching principles in various areas. Examples of related areas include athletic arenas, programs and teams, sports businesses, sport recreation services, health clubs, and fitness facilities. They learn about the organization, administration, and management of sports and how to guide an array of employees, athletes, and volunteers. The program requires a total of 51 credit hours, including 24 credits of business core courses and 27 credits of sports management courses. The business core courses include financial accounting, business communications, statistics for business, principles of macroeconomics, principles of microeconomics, business policy seminar, principles of marketing, and principles of management. Some of the sports management courses are as follows: sport marketing and promotion, sociology of sport, sport writing and information, ethics in sport management, sport finance, and legal aspects of sport management. Students are also required to complete an internship in sport management.

The Sport & Fitness Management Department at Mitchell College provides students with rigorous, interactive, and rewarding degree programs. Bachelor of Science in Sport and Fitness Management in Sport Management

Students are required to participate in the internship program and they complete internships at both the sophomore and senior levels. Students have the ability to develop an individualized plan of study that incorporates core and sport management concentration courses and a minor and/or study abroad component. The sport management courses include introduction to sport management, sport ethics, marketing in sport and entertainment, legal issues in recreation and sports, adaptive sports, and administration of sports management. Students also gain practical experience through internships with various entities, such as professional sports teams, sports marketing companies, college athletic departments, and non-profit sport organizations.

M.S. Sport and Entertainment Management

The master’s degree in sport and entertainment management prepares individuals for leadership positions in the field. It prepares professional practitioners who gain an in-depth understanding of theoretical concepts in specific sport and entertainment management functions, like marketing, finance, communication, ethics, facility and event management, and international issues. Students also gain an understanding of the political and sociological influences in sports and entertainment in a diversity of settings. The program requires a total of 36 credits, including 18 core credits and then concentrated courses in either sport or entertainment options. Students also select six credits from the university’s MBA program and a sixe credit capstone course with either a thesis or internship and special project. The courses include governance and administration of sport, sport and entertainment law, sport and entertainment finance, facility and event management, marketing and sales in sport and entertainment, agent/artist management, operational research, and sport ethics.

The bachelor’s degree in sport management prepares students to pursue many different types of careers in the sport industry, including professional sports, sports goods organizations, facility management, intercollegiate athletics, private and public sport clubs, and event management. Students are required to complete various courses through the Department of Educational Leadership. The courses include introduction to sport management, financial management in the sport industry, sport in society, sport law, sport facility and event management, introduction to sport communication, and introduction to sport based youth development. Students must also complete a directed observation and participation experience and a complete summer internship in the field. Students have the ability to select from many different cognate areas, such as marketing, business administration, psychology, finance, business law, sociology, and educational leadership.

M.S. in Sport Management

The Master of Science in Sport Management program prepares students in the theoretical, research, and applied components of sport management. Students are required to choose either the thesis or internship option for the degree. The thesis option requires 24 credit hours of coursework and nine credit hours of research for the thesis. The internship choice includes 27 credit hours of coursework, a six credit hour internship experience, and a comprehensive examination. The coursework includes principles and methods in educational research, quantitative methods in educational research, sport marketing, sport in society, management of sport services, sport facility and event management, and legal aspects of sport.

Ph.D. in Learning, Leadership, and Educational Policy in Sport Management

The doctoral program in sport management enables students to gain an advanced understanding of the field and it grants flexibility in the areas of specialization. The program is designed around the theoretical structures of sport management and the applied qualities of sport in today’s world. The core courses are chosen in collaboration with the students major advisor, but generally includes 18 credit hours of core courses in learning, leadership, and educational policy, nine credit hours of sport management core courses, a minimum of 12 credit hours of statistics and research methods courses, nine credit hours in a specialization area, and 15 credit hours of dissertation. Students must also complete a comprehensive examination. The sport management core courses include organizational theory in sport, organizational behavior in sport, and current research in sport management.
