Cumberland University offers a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Athletic Coaching, Bachelor of Science in Sport Management, Bachelor of Science in Sport and Exercise Science, Master of Arts in Sport Management, and Master of Exercise and Sport Science.

The Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Athletic Coaching promotes excellence in sport studies and kinesiology to enable students to apply concepts and teaching in physical education and athletic coaching. A minimum of 121 credit hours is needed for completion of the degree. The required core courses include Psycho-Socio Aspects of Movement, Foundations of Health, Physical Education, and Athletic Programs, Fundamentals of Coaching, Physical Education Activities, Skill Themes and Movement Concepts, Measurement and Evaluation in Physical Education and Sports, Motor Learning and Development, Health and Physical Education in the Classroom, and Curriculum Development in Health and Physical Education.

The Bachelor of Science in Sport Management prepares students for careers in the sports industry. A minimum of 120 credit hours are needed for completion. The sport management courses include Introduction to Sport Management, Sport Law, Sport Ethics, Sport Enterprise, Sport Entrepreneurship, Sport Marketing, Sport Leadership and Governance, Administration of Health, Physical Education and Athletic Programs, and Facility Planning and Design in Recreation and Sports Administration.

The Bachelor of Science in Sport and Exercise Science provides students with the necessary evidence-based knowledge, theory, skills, and personal attributes to pursue meaningful careers in an array of areas in exercise and sport science or related area. The program prepares students for national certification from the American College of Sports Medicine, such as the Certified Exercise Physiologist. A minimum of 120 credit hours is needed to finish the degree. The exercise and sport science courses include Medical Terminology, Lifetime Fitness, Weightlifting, Strength and Conditioning Practicum, Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries, Physiology of Exercise, Advanced Techniques in Strength and Conditioning, Kinesiology, Exercise Testing and Prescription, and Administration of Health, Physical Education and Athletic Programs.

The Master of Arts in Sport Management is an online program that prepares students for advanced careers in sport management. A minimum of 33 credit hours is needed to finish the degree. The courses include Psycho-Socio Aspects of Sport and Exercise, Quantitative Methods, Research Methods, History and Philosophy of Physical Education and Sports, Event and Facility Management, Sport Marketing, Administration of Physical/Health Education, Intramurals and Athletics, Fiscal Issues in Sport, Sport Law and Ethics, and Leadership Seminar. Students must also complete a thesis, internship, or graduate project.

The Master of Exercise and Sport Science provides students with relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities to pursue careers where they show best practices, good ethical decision making, and advocacy abilities to assist individuals enhancing performance and pursuing healthy lifestyle behaviors. The program requires the completion of 36 credit hours and students can choose a thesis or non-thesis option. The courses include Clinical Exercise Physiology, Advanced Exercise Testing and Prescription, Theoretical and Practical Aspects of Strength and Power Conditioning, Psychology in Human Performance, Motor Learning and Development, Pedagogy of Physical Education and Sport, Psycho-Socio Aspects of Sport and Exercise, and Leadership Seminar.

Cumberland University is a private institution of higher learning located in Lebanon, Tennessee. It was founded in 1842 and it opened Tennessee’s first law school in 1847. In 1946 the Tennessee Baptist Convention gained control of the University. Throughout its history, it operated as a four-year institution and a junior school. It regained operation as a four-year university in 1982. Master’s degree programs started in 1995. Today, Cumberland University is home to more than 2,400 students on its 44-acre suburban campus. It functions on the semester-based academic calendar.

Federal Work-Study

The Federal Work-Study program is funded by the federal government. It allows students who show significant financial need to work on a part-time basis to earn money to help pay for college expenses. Students are able to work up to 20 hours per week while taking classes. Students are required to enroll at least half time. The pay depends on each situation, but students make at least the current federal minimum wage.
